  • As testament to man's small rebellion against the desert's unyielding grasp, water, the rarest of desert commodities, flows freely from the shared outdoor shower, satisfying that uniquely human need to cleanse not just the body, but the soul. A solitary and twisted tree, as gnarled and old as the hills themselves, its leaves and bark devoured long ago by the relentless fury of the desert, stands quietly above. Here, in the emptiness and under the ever-watchful eye of the blazing sun, one can stand alone, and in the cooling touch of that precious water find a brief and fragile communion with the wild and untamed heart of Terlingua, where the boundaries between man and nature have worn thin and indistinct.

  • When morning comes and the canvas begins to glow with the first light of day and the tired shadows begin their retreat from the searing sun to havens beneath the stones and the trees and the creosote bush, step outside into the cool morning air and smell the lingering smoke from a still smoldering fire and find yet another testament to the tenacity of humans, a second tent, a canvas cathedral serving a purpose far more noble than mere refuge. The camp kitchen stands as a crude necessity dwarfed by the endless expanse of sky and bearing the brutal beauty of the desert on its weathered shoulders and determined in its resolve that no wind or weather will delay this day's sustenance. Inside, find a gas stove and utensils and cast iron pots and pans embellished with the patina of a thousand fires and all the other trappings of a rudimentary culinary existence arranged with cleanliness and care.
